CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

Grace cursed under her breath and slammed her fist against the lighted button on the soda machine in the break room at the sheriff’s department in Deering. The blasted machine had stolen her money, giving her nothing in return.

Reed sidled up next to her.

“Need some help?” he asked.

Although they were indoors, he still wore his navy coat. Zipped all the way up to his chin.

Grace hadn’t needed Reed to tell her how to do her job when it came to capturing Mitchell, and she didn’t need him to come to her rescue now.

“I think I can handle it.”

Her eyes narrowed with determination as she took a step back and then rammed her shoulder into the greedy contraption. The machine wobbled and then hummed to life. Like magic, two cans of soda clunked into the dispenser tray.

“See, all it takes is a little targeted persuasion,” she said.

Grace just wished the tactic had worked on Mitchell.

The minute she’d chained his handcuffs to the metal loop on the floorboard in the back seat of her sedan, Mitchell had asked for an attorney. Once he’d invoked that right, his interrogation had been put on hold.

Reed must have read Grace’s thoughts.

“Now that Mitchell’s lawyered up,” he began, “it’s doubtful we’ll get a confession.”

She nodded. But when Mitchell finished his meeting with the attorney, and she and Reed were allowed to question him, Grace would give it her all. She’d already planned her strategy. Whether Mitchell would crack under the pressure remained to be seen.

However, Wisconsin didn’t have the death penalty, so they couldn’t use that as a bargaining chip to entice Mitchell to admit to the murders. The only deal the man could finagle was cutting his jail time. And while the district attorney might agree to a reduced sentence, Grace opposed it. She wanted full justice for Mitchell’s deeds—life in prison.

“I’m just glad that we were able to get him into custody before he killed again,” she said.

Grace held out a can of soda. “Do you want one?”

“No thanks. I’ll stick to coffee,” Reed stated, cupping his insulated travel mug.

It seemed he’d been hanging onto the oversized tumbler for dear life since they’d arrived. It was now after seven p.m. She wondered how many times he’d refilled it.

Reed leaned against the battered wooden table. “I think I know where Mitchell planned to take Rob Ledford.”

The news surprised her. “Where?”

“I don’t have an exact location, but I think I’ve figured out why Mitchell picked those two particular bridges.”

Grace hoped Reed wasn’t about to give her a history lesson. In her opinion, the reason Mitchell had chosen the bridges was simple. They were located near his victims’ homes.

“Right, you said that you’d found a link between them.”

Reed nodded. “It has to do with local legends. Both of the bridges where the bodies were found have well-publicized ghost stories connected to them.”

Grace fought hard not to roll her eyes. She realized that Reed came from an area where voodoo lore was a part of the culture, but that was no reason to jump on the supernatural bandwagon here.
